MA KAMAKHYA

History of Tarapith and Kamakhya Temple

Tarapith Temple – The Abode of Maa Tara

The sacred temple of Tarapith, located in Birbhum district of West Bengal, is one of the most revered Shakti Peethas in India. The origin of Tarapith is rooted in the ancient Puranic legend of Sati. When Maa Sati immolated herself in the yajna of Daksha, Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to cut her body into pieces to calm Lord Shiva’s grief-stricken tandava. It is believed that Sati’s third eye, or netra, fell at this very place, sanctifying Tarapith as a powerful Shakti Peetha.

The presiding deity of Tarapith is Maa Tara, one of the ten Mahavidyas. She is worshipped here in her fierce yet deeply compassionate form, embodying both the mother’s nurturing love and the protector’s fearsome strength. The deity is adorned with skull garlands and seated on a corpse, symbolizing the transcendence of worldly illusion and the eternal truth of life and death.

Tarapith is also a center of Tantric sadhana. For centuries, saints and sadhakas have performed their spiritual practices here, considering it the heart of Tantric worship. Among them, the most renowned is the great saint Bamakhepa, often called the "mad saint" of Tarapith. His unconditional devotion and mystical practices elevated Tarapith into a living seat of Shakti worship. The adjoining Maha Smashan (cremation ground) is equally sacred, representing the ultimate reality of existence and serving as a ground for Tantric realization.

Devotees believe that worship at Tarapith removes fear, fulfills desires, and bestows divine protection. The temple continues to draw pilgrims from all corners of India who come seeking the grace of Maa Tara, the eternal mother and liberator.

Kamakhya Temple – The Seat of Shakti

The Kamakhya Temple, situated atop the Nilachal Hill in Guwahati, Assam, is one of the most ancient and powerful Shakti Peethas in the world. It is believed to be the place where Maa Sati’s womb and yoni, the symbol of feminine creative energy, fell. This makes Kamakhya the ultimate seat of Shakti, embodying fertility, regeneration, and the eternal source of creation.

Unlike most temples, Kamakhya does not house an idol. Instead, the central object of worship is a yoni-shaped stone naturally bathed by an underground perennial spring. This sacred form symbolizes the ever-flowing, life-sustaining power of the Divine Mother.

Kamakhya is especially renowned for the annual Ambubachi Mela, which commemorates the Goddess’s menstrual cycle. During this period, the temple remains closed for three days, after which it reopens with grand celebrations. This unique festival acknowledges and venerates the natural rhythms of creation and regeneration, setting Kamakhya apart as a temple where the mysteries of nature are worshipped in their purest form.

The temple has been a center for Tantric practices for centuries. Sadhakas and seekers of spiritual power have long regarded Kamakhya as the highest seat of Tantric wisdom, where the barriers between the physical and spiritual dissolve. Worship here is believed to bring siddhis, fulfillment of desires, protection from adversities, and the blessings of divine prosperity.

The Sacred Connection of Tarapith and Kamakhya

While Tarapith and Kamakhya are two distinct Shakti Peethas, they are united in their significance to Tantric tradition and Shakti worship. Tarapith represents the fierce yet compassionate aspect of the Mother as Maa Tara, while Kamakhya represents the eternal source of fertility and creation. Both temples are not only centers of worship but also living repositories of spiritual wisdom and mystical practices that have been preserved through centuries.

Together, they form a spiritual bridge for devotees who seek liberation, strength, prosperity, and divine protection. For generations, seekers, saints, and common devotees alike have journeyed to these temples to connect with the unfathomable power of the Divine Mother. To this day, the vibrations of Tarapith and Kamakhya continue to inspire faith, devotion, and transformation in all who surrender at the feet of the Mother.
